Phil likes to say we met on a deserted island.

We were both sailing in a regatta on the Columbia River, the annual RCYC Long Distance Race. It’s a 30-mile race from Portland to Sand Island, a small marine park in the middle of the Columbia River across from the town of St. Helens. It’s a down-and-back race with an overnight spent on Sand Island, and you either sleep on your boat moored to the public docks or you camp on the sandy beach on the northern side of the island.
